Leo Nikolaivitch Tolstoy, the author of War and Peace (among other literary masterpieces) was a deeply religious Russian Orthodox Christian. In 1908 he wrote: “The Jew is the emblem of eternity. He whom neither slaughter nor torture of thousands of years could destroy, he whom neither fire nor sword nor inquisition was able to wipe off the face of the earth, he was the first to produce the oracles of God, he who has been for so long the guardian of prophecy, and who transmitted it to the rest of the world – such a nation cannot be destroyed.”
King Louis XIV of France asked Blaise Pascal, the great French philosopher, to give him proof of the supernatural. Pascal answered: “Why, the Jews, your Majesty—the Jews.”
Mark Twain (aka Samuel Clemens), the great American writer was an agnostic and a skeptic. In 1899 he wrote.“The Egyptian, the Babylonian, and the Persian rose, filled the planet with sound and splendor, then faded to dream-stuff and passed away. The Greek and Roman followed, made a vast noise and they are gone. Other peoples have sprung up, and held their torch high for a time, but it burned out and they sit in twilight now or have vanished. The Jew saw them all, beat them all, and is now what he always was, exhibiting no decadence, no infirmities of age, no weakening of his parts, no slowing of his energies, no dulling of his alert and aggressive mind. All things are mortal, but the Jew. All other forces pass, but he remains. What is the secret of his immortality?” (Harper’s Magazine)
Throughout history the Jew has survived while others bloomed for a season and then were gone. The Egyptian Empire, the Amalekites, The Assyrian Empire, The Hittites, The Chaldean Empire, The Philistines, The Babylonian Empire, The Persian Empire, The Greek Empire, The Roman Empire, The Byzantine Empire, The Ottoman Turkish Empire, the Soviet Empire and the Nazis – all consigned to history.
It is just a matter of time before Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah and others join the list. It is a fact of history, the Jews have survived even when their enemies were mighty, powerful forces by human, military standards.
An obvious bible verse comes to mind. “And I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.” (Genesis 12: 3)
Rabbi Yaacov Emden (1695-1776) in a famous beloved Siddur wrote. “Many have tried to injure us – but they were not able to destroy us or to wipe us out. While all the great ancient civilizations have disappeared and been forgotten, the nation of Israel who clings to Hashem, is alive today!
“What will the wise historian answer when he examines this phenomenon without prejudice? Was this all purely by chance!? By my soul, When I contemplate these great wonders (of our continued survival) they took on greater significance then all the miracles and wonders that Hashem performed for our Fathers in Egypt, in the desert and when they entered the Land of Israel.
“And the longer this exile extends the miracle of Jewish existence becomes more obvious to make known G-d’s mastery and supervision over nature and history.” (Rabbi Yaacov Emden, 1695-1776 – “Siddur Beit Yaacov”)
More thoughts from the Bible indicate the promises of an Almighty Protector have been miraculously achieved.
In fact the enormity of the deliverance and preservation of Israel and the Jewish people rates alongside the most breathtaking of biblical events.
“Then the LORD your God will restore you from captivity, and have compassion on you, and will gather you again from all the peoples where the LORD your God has scattered you. If your outcasts are at the ends of the earth, from there the LORD your God will gather you, and from there He will bring you back.
“The LORD your God will bring you into the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it; and He will prosper you and multiply you more than your fathers. (Deut. 30:3-5)
“But as for you, O Jacob My servant, do not fear, nor be dismayed, O Israel! For, see, I am going to save you from afar, and your descendants from the land of their captivity; And Jacob will return and be undisturbed and secure, with no one making him tremble.” (Jeremiah 46:27
“No weapon that is formed against you will prosper; And every tongue that accuses you in judgment you will condemn.
This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their vindication is from Me,” declares the LORD
