Psalm 83 and the Palestinian Authority.

Mahmoud Abbas, PA Chairman

Observing developments in the Middle East draws me constantly to read Psalm 83. Maybe the antics of the Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas is actually an answer to the prayer in Psalm 83: 1.

Abbas reminds me of the kid at school who sulked. On a television show this weekend, he said he would dissolve his governing body if Israel and the international community do not approve the Palestinian state.

Is he kidding? Maybe not. Make no mistake by referring to ‘the international community’ he meant the U.S.A.

Newt Gingrich, a likely Republican candidate for U.S. President in 2012, in a Foxnews interview, described the Obama administration as ‘stupid’ for not dealing effectively with the Wikileaks saga. They will be super-stupid if they continue to ignore and even pamper the fanaticism of the contriving Abbas.

He was elected to serve as PA Chairman for a four year term in 2005. Do the math. 2005 plus 4 years equals 2009. Oops! Has the PA past its used by date? Certainly its legal term in office is well and truly over and out.

Abbas and his Arafat hand-me-downs have repeatedly refused elections saying they are impossible until Hamas and Fatah reunite. “I cannot accept to remain the president of an authority that doesn’t exist,” he said.

When pressed on his meaning, Abbas spoke of Israel taking on responsibility for the West Bank. “You are here, stay here, I cannot accept the situation will remain as is.”

In the words of Psalm 83 ‘they make shrewd plans against Your people.’ ‘For they have conspired with one mind.’ Psalm 83: 12 “Who said, ‘Let us possess for ourselves the pastures of God.’”

The Middle East peace talks have been in limbo since September.

The Israel settlement-building programme is the point of contention. “Israel has chosen settlements and not peace,” Saeb Erekat, the chief Palestinian negotiator observed. Israel however, says the settlements should be discussed within the peace talks process and not conceded before the parties actually meet for negotiations.

What a good trick! Get your slice of the pie before the talks and the just discuss the left-overs. Nice try!!!

Dahlan

Abbas is not pleased even with his own gang. He is now at odds with the former PA strongman Mohammed Dahlan. Abbas removed policemen who were assigned to guard Dahlan, the former security commander. Abbas ordered the closure of a TV station owned by Dahlan, who is a member of the Fatah Central Committee. The chairman believes Dahlan is trying to undermine his authority.

To add to concerns, Abbas has ordered an investigation of former PA security officials. He told the pan-Arab Al-Jazeera TV network, the officials are being investigated for embezzling public funds. Dahlan is one of the men under investigation.

Abbas has gone so far as to seek help from Interpol to arrest officials who have fled the Palestinian territories.

Reminds me of Psalm 83: 11 “Make their nobles like Oreb and Zeeb and all their princes like Zebah and Zalmunna.”

Does anyone else get the feeling, something is wrong within the Palestinian cause?

Let’s face facts. The ‘Palestinian Arabs’ have no desire to live side by side with Israel as a Jewish state. In the meantime, the struggle for power and control within the ‘Palestinian’ entity is all about thuggery, control and duress. It has little or nothing to do with ‘the will of the people.’

Brings me to Psalm 83: 16 “Fill their faces with dishonor, that they may seek the Lord.” Now I can ‘Amen’ that!
