We are the Reason for the Season!

Look carefully at the Christmas tree. It conveys truth and reality. Its source of vitality and life comes because the fruitful branches are connected. That connection is vital.

Jesus was born in Bethlehem because we, all of us, needed help to get out of a mess. In the creation of the world God said that all He had done was good. No regrets there.

God was also pleased when He created Adam and Eve. He enjoyed their fellowship and spent relaxed, intimate time with them day after day.

Then came the separation caused when they chose to do their own thing. He said, “No!” They said, “Why not?” They went after the forbidden fruit although He warned them of the consequences.

Satan who delights to challenge the wisdom of God seduced Adam and Eve and they fell for his trap.
It seems so easy and even ‘cool’ to get trapped from time to time but like my Christmas tree, soon the leaves wilt and the green will droop to brown. The once radiant, attractive tree will be worthless only good for the fire.

The Lord saw us going the way of the tree. He chose to step in and initiate His own rescue mission, all at His own expense.

I have always held tightly to bible verses. They give me a lift, even when my choices have been less than wise.

Consider Matthew 10: 29-31 “Even the very hairs on your head are numbered.” I often think about a Father who pays me that kind of detailed attention. That verse has your name on it too!

Just as the Father went into detail with Adam and Eve, He has known you in the same way. “I knew you even before you were conceived,” He says in Jeremiah 1: 4-5.

Maybe you were orphaned, or you suffered from what is called ‘the absent father syndrome.’ In the lonely darkness He was there..

Then there is Psalm 139:14 “You are fearfully and wonderfully made.” Wow!

The spirit of this world delights to tell you, ‘you’re no good!.’ ‘you’ll never amount to anything!’ But God says, “I offer you more than your earthly father ever could.” That’s in Matthew 7: 11

I know how popular and significant it is to proclaim ‘Jesus is the reason for the season.’ It rhymes and is quite catchy. But there is a deep significance to the Christmas story, which I encourage you not to miss…. We are the reason for this season, you and me.

“My plan for your future has always been filled with hope,” God declared in Jeremiah 29:11

This year as you experience Christmas take time to think about the God who came to claim you as His child. Jesus came to prepare the way for that relationship to be possible.

The whole idea of Christmas gift-giving comes from this greatest gift of all – Jesus, the son of God who came that we might know the Father.

Gospel singer/songwriter David Meece wrote a great song entitled “We are the Reason.”
His lyrics start this way:

As little children we’d dream of Christmas morn
And all the gifts and toys we knew we’d find
But we never realized a baby born one blessed night
Gave us the greatest gift of our lives

We are the reason that He gave His life
We were the reason that He suffered and died
To a world that was lost He gave all He could give
To show us the reason to live

Have a blessed & memorable Christmas.
