Sydney Churches Terror Threats.

Fireworks provided a spectacular welcome to the New Year and it seems an international terrorist groups has further, more lethal plans in that direction.

Four Coptic churches in Sydney have been threatened. So often, we in Australia, regard terrorist activities as being over there, elsewhere, anywhere but here. But the Weekend Australian reports that 60 Coptic Churches worldwide have been threatened and four of the targets are in Sydney.

“It couldn’t happen here,” is the denial defence used by so many. However, in places like Israel, Europe and the USA threats are taken very seriously.

It is hard to feel the impact of a report which describes 21 killed in a New Year’s Eve attack at a Coptic Church because it happened in Alexandria, Egypt.

Now Sydney suburbs are in the crosshairs. Mt Druitt, Punchbowl, Arncliffe and Rhodes have been named.
Why these four were chosen remains a mystery. There are 17 Coptic churches in Sydney alone.

Police responded believing the attacks could come during the Coptic Christmas celebrations, which took place last Friday.

In France, Germany and the Netherlands police protection for Christian Copts was upgraded after internet threats. In Italy the Copts requested special protection. At a church just outside of Paris metal barricades were put in place.

“This threat is serious for us. People are afraid,” Pastor Arsenious El Baramousy, head of the Coptic church in Amsterdam told the Washington Post. ‘What happened in Alexandria, could happen in Amsterdam,” he said.

We would be more than dumb to think that somehow Sydney or anywhere else in Australia is safe from criminal violation.

We are called upon to be vigilant. The whole escalating terror climate proves the wisdom of the Bible.

John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.”
