There is no argument, the world is in chaos. Revolution is in the air. Vast numbers of people are defying powerful leaders to demand a better life, more freedom, at least freedom to choose their fate. Some have given up. They walk away from the flux and turmoil and hide in their drugs, booze or escape into any form of reality denying indulgence.
The imploding of Charlie Sheen is a tragic example of hedonism out of control. The pathetic Hollywood version of happiness is played out in marriage breakdowns, live-in lovers and a me-centred focus fed by multi-million dollar salaries to subsidize a sad-unfulfilling smorgasboard of unsatisfying living just to capture a few brief and fleeting highs. That behaviour is not new. The Apostle Paul called them ‘slaves.’
“For such men are slaves, not of our Lord Christ but of their own appetites; and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive the hearts of the unsuspecting.” (Romans 16:18)
The world has drifted away from the Bible and the absolutes it declares. Unfortunately there is a prolific form of Christianity around today that paints the God of love as one who never frowns. In fact the Apostle Paul said the biblical deity rather than the man-made Santa Claus one created by liberalism, experiences ‘wrath.’
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.” (Romans 1:18) Please note, this is a New Testament verse but quite in keeping with the foundational Scriptures given before the birth of the Lord. He does have absolutes!!!
Somehow many have the mistaken idea, God is sitting in His heavenly throne knitting or playing scrabble with the angels (Don’t know why, they’ll never beat Him!). Others like to think He doesn’t exist at all. But God gave us a blueprint on how we should live according to His divine plan and purpose, and our governments, media-moguls and the rest of us, just choose to ignore Him.
Some in theological circles call it ‘an explosion of immorality’ or the Kingdom of Self. God warned that it would bring us trouble and heartache. Despite His merciful, Fatherly warnings, we carry on ‘doing our own thing.’
The Bible told us He would respond because ‘everyone did what was right in his own eyes.’ (Judges 21:25) What an excellent phrase to describe the Me-centredness of society today? We initiate tragic consequences because like Adam, we ignored Him.
Oh we can be absorbed by the headline stuff that proclaims Islamism, terror attacks and Iran as major contributors to the fear and anxiety epidemic. They are. But pride, greed, broken homes, abortion, homosexuality, substance abuse, sexually transmitted disease, pornography and on and on, are all major contributors to the collapse of so-called ‘civilised’ society.
The church is not immune. It has become a serious challenge to find a church, which speaks of the living God and finds His guidance in the Word its priority. Even Jesus found cause to condemn this problem. “You have made it a robbers’ den” He said. (Mark 11:17)
Ear-tickling, Dr Feelgood programmes abound but it is The Truth that sets us free. Without it we race headlong into no freedom. Let’s call it bondage (slavery to sin).
Years ago Christian missionaries left home to preach and teach in foreign fields. Now the Western world is in desperate need of the the Gospel because so many have drifted away from its truth. The new generation of Pauls, Peters, Johns and Marys may be called to Washington, London or Sydney as well as to the further fields. They may find their mission in education, politics, public service, media, medical, music or even selling used cars or real estate. There is no domain to be ruled out, as we put on the full armour and seek to extend His promises according to the Bible.
Jesus came and lived in the midst of a fallen people. He lived when Rome occupied Jerusalem. Christians at that time were persecuted and despised. They met in private homes to worship, study and pray. He demonstrated how it is possible to be FOR the Father against all the odds. He taught His followers to show the same passion and courage. In fact He equipped them to do all He called them to do by sending the Holy Spirit.
Today so many seek the Spirit for selfish, me-centred goals. He was given to do the will of the Father, specifically to ‘go into all the world and preach the gospel.’ (Mark 16:15) ‘All the world’ by the way, means everywhere. The Spirit and the Bride are united. That’s what makes a true and living Bride of Christ, Spirit-filled, mountain-moving Church. It is THE Church.
For me, one single verse clearly portrays the battle. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10)
The world can clearly see the activities and even the footprint of the ‘thief’. We are not on his side. The abundant life promise is what we have been called to proclaim in Jesus name. It will take more than words. People will learn so much by studying our lives, habits and character traits. One without the other falls to the legitimate charge of hypocrisy.
I refuse to be dismayed by the world events that are swamping the earth today. God is in control, make no mistake about it.
Right now He is calling each one who seeks to be His disciples to fast, pray, preach, teach and even witness by the lives we live, and the examples we set. Someone may know Hebrew, Latin, Greek better than you but that’s OK. You just need to know Jesus to speak His language and do His thing.
Instead of being overwhelmed by what is happening in this fallen world, look to the Lord who seeks to give you His blessing. Take these words of the Saviour and make them your own.
“You did not choose Me but I chose you, and appointed you that you would go and bear fruit, and that your fruit would remain, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name He may give to you.” (John 15:16)
